Wait For It
If you are a human with access to Disney Plus, you are very aware of the newest addition this month - the Broadway production of Hamilton.
I was never really into the idea, even as a history nerd, and where tickets were so difficult to get, I just couldn't understand why there was such a draw to this show. He wasn't even president!
Well.. I have eaten crow and am now obsessed with the show and all the little nuances that go with it. I have been listening to the soundtrack nonstop (yeah, that was a reference...), and often find myself singing something from the show throughout the day.
I am honestly blown away by the incredible work that Lin-Manuel Miranda put into this production and the way it is portrayed. From the cast selection to the music, the set to the costumes - it's a serious stroke of genius.
The show is centered around Alexander Hamilton (I am not going to summarize it.. do yourself a favor and sit down for 2 hours and 40 minutes and ENJOY IT!), and his demise. The way the story is told is incredibly symbolic, the way the music is written is out of this world. The original Broadway cast was perfectly selected to play their roles, and will always hold a special place in my heart. While I was unable to see it on stage, having it at my fingertips whenever I want to get lost in it has been an experience unlike any other.
There is one song in particular (I love them all and may rank them in another post some day...) that inspired this post. It might be one of the 5 I know by heart. "Wait For It" sung by Aaron Burr (or Leslie Odom Jr. in the recorded performance) is a song that actually moved me emotionally the first time I heard it, and quickly became my favorite. The section that moved me goes:
I am the one thing in life I can control
Wait for it, wait for it
Wait for it, wait for it
I am inimitable, I am an original
Wait for it, wait for it
Wait for it, wait for it
I'm not falling behind or running late
Wait for it, wait for it
Wait for it, wait for it
I'm not standing still, I am lying in wait
We are so often looking ahead and comparing our lives to others. Instead of trying to control every aspect of your life (hello anxiety and depression), what if you just controlled yourself and your actions? What if you loved yourself and accepted yourself for where you are and what you want? What if we stopped putting a timeline on our lives and lived for the moment? What if we shifted our mindset to see the beauty instead of what isn't lining up with what we thought we wanted in life?
Sure, the song is about waiting for his time to shine, while living in the shadows of Alexander Hamilton's successes - but like any song in life we can pull things out of the actual context and insert them into every day life.
I came across a bit of this clip on TikTok (keep your judgement to yourself!) and was blown away from the sheer magnitude of the talent here: Wait For It - 360. My first taste of Leslie Odom Jr.'s talent was when he was added to the cast of the TV show SMASH on NBC. He had an incredible set of pipes then - but as Burr, he blew me away. That video just goes to show how talented the cast is.
The song has become something I carry with me everywhere I go. Slow down, accept yourself and your life where you are at in the moment, and find a way to succeed at everything you want to - but in its own time. Let things unfold as they are meant to, while continuing to dream and chase your goals.
