The Work That Built My Family
All four of my grandparents are gone now, which means I am left piecing together their stories through memories, photos, and the way they still show up in who I am.
What they left behind with my parents, my brother, my cousins, and I are the memories we made while they were still here... and those are the most important to us. Looking at the lives they built for themselves (and together) is always so exciting for me. Learning about where I came from is so intriguing.. good thing I went to school for history!
Granddaddy (Mom's dad) dedicated over 40 years of his life working for the gas company - first with Boston Gas and later with National Grid (when they bought them out). Yes - the gas tank in the harbor even displayed their logo - locals to the area will remember seeing Boston Gas and then later National Grid from the highway. His commitment and long service truly exemplified a hardworking drive that runs deep in our roots.
Nana (Mom's mom) originally from Nova Scotia, came here to be a nanny to a doctor in Newton. Once she had children of her own she found her calling in the world of cosmetology, working in drug stores. Many of us remember her days at CVS in the South Shore Plaza, always ready with a smile.
Grampy (Dad's dad) spent his career at RCA which later became GE. Starting in the shipping department, he climbed his way up the ranks to become a director. During his time at RCA, he was involved in some pretty extraordinary projects - I've been told he worked on the lunar rover for NASA (super cool that there's a bit of our family history tied to big events in history!!). After years of dedicated service, he retired from GE, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and dedication.
Grammy (Dad's mom) was the family's number cruncher - she handled taxes for companies and individuals alike. Her analytical skills and quick thinking made her a natural when it came to numbers. She worked at several companies, always ensuring everything added up perfectly. I often wonder if that's where I inherited my love for details from!
Both sets of grandparents worked tirelessly to provide for their 3 children (both of my parents are one of 3 children!), instilling in them and then their grandchildren the values of hard work, perseverance, and family. After their respective retirements, they poured their energies into making beautiful memories with their friends and family - moments we still talk about to this day. Their dedication and love laid the foundation for our family's story... one filled with resilience, ambition, and unforgettable moments.
